Working in cold environments presents additional risks and challenges. It is essential that Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) performs effectively in low temperatures and remains compatible when worn alongside extra layers. Selecting winter-appropriate PPE ensures workers stay safe, warm, and able to carry out their tasks without restriction.
Eye Protection
In colder conditions, eye protection must meet specific performance standards:
- Reduced visibility is common in winter due to shorter days and poor lighting. Lenses with high light transmission improve visibility.
- Glare from ice and snow can impair vision. Lenses that filter UV and sunglare help reduce this effect.
- Fogging is a frequent issue. Choose products with anti-mist coatings. Eye protectors tested to EN 166 for resistance to fogging will display an ‘N’ marking.
- Impact resistance at low temperatures is tested at -5°C. Products passing this test will display a ‘T’ marking after the impact rating.
Head Protection
Extra layers under helmets can reduce safety:
- Avoid wearing hats or hoods under helmets. These can interfere with harness fit and reduce shock absorption.
- Use approved helmet liners. These are designed to fit securely and safely inside JSP safety helmets without compromising performance.
- Cold-weather bump caps are available within the JSP range, offering insulation and additional coverage around the ears and neck.
Respirators and Ear Defenders
Extra clothing must not affect the seal or position of RPE or hearing protection:
- Do not wear thermal balaclavas or snoods under tight-fitting respirators or ear defenders. These can prevent a proper seal and reduce protection.
- Fit testing should be conducted while wearing all necessary clothing and accessories to ensure the correct fit.
- Ensure all PPE remains in the correct position during use to maintain protection levels.
Summary – Key Points:
- Select winter-rated PPE that offers UV, sunglare, and anti-mist protection.
- Only use approved helmet liners; avoid unapproved hats or hoods under helmets.
- Ensure bump caps and liners are compatible with JSP head protection.
- Check that additional winter clothing does not interfere with respirators or ear defenders.
- Perform fit testing when winter layers are added to confirm seal and compatibility.
