What filter is needed for Bitrex® mist or aerosol testing?

Choosing the correct filter for qualitative face fit testing using Bitrex®

Fit Testing using Bitrex® mist, aerosol is used during Qualitative face fit testing, a high-efficiency particle filter (P3) is suitable. However P1, P2 are also suitable. Gas combination filters must be complemented with a particle filter element P1, 2, 3 when qualitative Fit Testing.

Bitrex® is a non-toxic, bitter-tasting mist,  aerosol used to check the seal of a tight-fitting respirator. The trademarked name is known as Denatonium Benzoate which is added to a wide range of products including under the sink cleaning products, cosmetics and automotive screen wash. The use of Bitrex discourages children from accidentally eating and swallowing under the sink products coated with it. Bitrex® influences a gagging reflex to hinder children swallowing harmful products. Despite being digestible it is extremely bitter tasting.  There are no adverse effects when Fit Testing.

Key points:

  • Filtering Face Pieces (or disposable dust masks, FFP1, FFP2, FFP3) and half face mask respirators fitted with P1, P2, P3 particle filters are suitable during Bitrex® mist, aerosol Qualitative Fit Testing.
  • Bitrex® is used in qualitative face fit tests to assess the respirator seal.
