What Factors Affect the Fit of a Respirator?

Key considerations for achieving a proper seal with tight-fitting RPE

Every person’s face is different in shape, size, and proportion, which means that no single respirator will fit everyone. To ensure effective protection, it is crucial to try various respirator types and sizes to find the best fit for the individual wearer.

There are several key factors that can affect the fit of a tight-fitting respirator:

  • Facial hair: Anyone wearing tight-fitting Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE) must be clean-shaven in the areas where the respirator seal touches the face. Facial hair in these areas will interfere with the seal and reduce protection.
  • Eyewear and other PPE: Items such as prescription glasses and other personal protective equipment can disrupt the fit of the respirator. These items should be worn during a fit test to ensure they do not compromise the seal during actual use.
  • Jewellery and make-up: Any jewellery or cosmetic products that come into contact with the respirator seal must be removed. These can interfere with the face-to-seal contact and compromise the effectiveness of the respirator.

Key points:

  • Facial shape and size vary – not all respirators will fit every individual.
  • Users must try different types and sizes to find the right fit.
  • Tight-fitting RPE requires a clean-shaven face where the seal makes contact.
  • Eyewear and other PPE should be worn during fit testing to check compatibility.
  • Remove jewellery and make-up that could interfere with the seal.
