Fit testing must be conducted at the time of initial respirator selection or, at the very latest, before the wearer uses the mask in a hazardous environment. It is essential that no one uses a tight-fitting facepiece without having first undergone a fit test.
If an untested respirator is currently being worn, or a user has not yet had a fit test, the test should be carried out without delay.
Fit testing must also be repeated:
- At regular intervals, as defined by your company's policy and risk assessment
- When the wearer gains or loses a significant amount of weight
- After the wearer has major dental treatment, facial surgery, or sustains a facial injury
- If there is a change in the type or size of respirator used
Key points:
- Fit testing is required before using RPE in hazardous environments
- Testing must be done immediately if RPE is already in use without a fit test
- Repeat fit tests regularly as per company policy
- Re-test if there are major changes to the wearer’s face or respirator type/size
