Occupational exposure to asbestos is the leading cause of cancer deaths. Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that develops following inhalation of asbestos fibres.
Mesothelioma and lung cancer are the most common forms of cancer leading to death. Awareness has improved but 2500+ deaths from mesothelioma still occur every year in the UK due to the slow development of the condition long after exposure*.
It is vital to protect workers against asbestos inhalation now to prevent irreversible and often fatal illnesses in the future.*HSE Mesothelioma statistics for Great Britain, 2022
Asbestos protection
Asbestos removal will usually need to be carried out by specially trained and licensed organisations. The correct grade of filter for asbestos is P3. For people working with asbestos, we would always recommend a full face respirator fitted with P3 filters. In addition, a quantitative face fit test must be carried out to ensure adequate protection. The HSE provides comprehensive guidance on working with asbestos and selecting appropriate protective equipment. Find out more about respiratory hazards encountered in the workplace.
