If you're heading to a festival that's expected to be hot, dry and dusty, it's worth thinking about what you'll be breathing in all weekend.
You’ve probably seen the videos online of people pulling a scarf or bandana over their face and assume they're protected. The reality is that these aren't designed to filter dust and don't create a seal around your nose and mouth, meaning dust can still be breathed in around the edges.
Look for a dust mask with a P3 filter rating.
The Simple Rule
✅ P3 masks are designed to filter very fine dust particles and offer a filter efficiency of more than 99%.
If you're spending several days at a particularly dusty festival, a P3-rated mask is the best choice.
You don't need to remember all the technical details. Just keep an eye out for the P3 marking on the packaging and ensure the respirator carries a CE mark. The CE mark indicates that a product meets EU health, safety, and environmental protection standards.

If it doesn't say P3, it is not designed to provide the highest level of protection against fine dust.

A Good Filter Still Needs a Good Fit
Even the best disposable respirators (FFPs – filtering facepiece) will not work effectively if the mask seal is not fitted properly to the wearer's face. Always refer to the manufacturer’s instructions or manufacturer's videos on how to wear the respirator properly.
That's why a loose scarf or face covering isn't enough. Dust will simply follow the path of least resistance and enter through any gaps around your cheeks, nose or chin.
When wearing a dust mask:
- Always read the manufacturer's instructions or seek the manufacturer's helpful product videos to understand how to fit the dust mask properly. Correct wear and use
- Understand product limitations: when to replace and exchange – damaged, clogged, wear time duration
- Understand the correct procedure of the face seal check / fit check (manufacturer's instructions)
- Your ability to recognise a poorly fitting respirator - always check your chosen FFP matches your facial features and seals to the wearer’s face.
- Facial hair between the wearer’s skin and the facepiece sealing surface is NOT recommended; unshaven faces, beards, moustaches, sideburns are just some of the instances which interfere with the respirator sealing surface and will compromise the respirator seal.
The wearer should be clean shaven in the area where the respirator seals against the face. Stubble, beards, facial jewellery and certain facial features can interfere with the face seal and reduce the level of protection provided.
Disposable dust masks (FFP masks), half masks and full face masks are classed as tight-fitting RPE. All tight-fitting respirators rely on the face seal making contact with the skin around the nose, cheeks and chin. If gaps are present, airborne dust can bypass the filter and enter the breathing zone. This is why achieving a good fit is just as important as selecting the correct protection.
For RPE to be effective, wear the respirator correctly as per the manufacturer’s instructions; an incorrectly worn respirator (poor donning) will offer less effective protection, and leakage into the respirator will be identified.
