The ASSIGNED PROTECTION FACTOR is specific for each type and class of RPE. It identifies the level of respiratory protection that can realistically be expected to be achieve in the workplace by 95% of adequately trained and supervised wearers using a properly functioning and correctly fitted respiratory protect device.
When selecting Adequate and Suitable RPE in the workplace, the Assigned Protection Factor (APF) should be used.
Each class of RPE has an assigned protection factor (APF) that tells you how much protection it will give you.
An APF of 10 means that the outside concentration of a particular contaminant will be 10 times greater outside than what will be inhaled through the respirator.
