Reusing Disposable Dust Masks – What You Need to Know
It may come as a surprise, but some disposable dust masks can be reused under certain conditions. These masks are usually marked with either “NR” (Not Reusable) or “R” (Reusable) on the packaging or the mask itself.
If a mask is marked “R” (Reusable), it means it can be worn more than once. However, extra care is required when storing it. The inside of the mask, especially the part that seals to your face, must be kept clean and free from contamination. If dust or hazardous material from the outer surface gets inside the mask, it could pose a risk the next time it's worn.
In reality, it is often difficult to keep a disposable mask clean enough for safe reuse, especially in messy or hazardous environments. For this reason, many workers choose to treat all disposable masks as single-use, even if they are marked as reusable.
All FFP (filtering facepiece) dust masks are classed as disposable and are generally designed for a maximum of 8 hours’ use. However, the actual use time may vary depending on the conditions and the state of the mask. If the mask becomes damaged, soiled, or hard to breathe through, it should be replaced immediately—regardless of the time used.
