When selecting PPE, it's easy to assume that if two products fit together, they must be compatible.
The reality is often more complicated.
Compatibility isn't just about whether products can be worn together. It's about whether they continue to provide their intended level of protection when used as a complete system.
This was one of the key topics discussed by Paul Bryce, Chief Commercial Officer at JSP, in our recent PPE compatibility and interoperability webinar.

What Does PPE Compatibility Mean?
Compatibility refers to the ability of two or more items of PPE to be worn together without causing problems. However, true protection goes beyond simply connecting products together.
In the webinar, Paul Bryce introduces the concept of interoperability, describing it as PPE that not only fits together, but works together in harmony without restricting protection, comfort or productivity.
Why Is PPE Compatibility Important?
Incompatible PPE can reduce protection levels, create discomfort and even introduce new hazards.
For example:
- A pair of ear defenders could affect the performance of a safety helmet.
- Additional PPE could interfere with the seal of a tight-fitting respirator.
- Poorly matched products may cause workers to continually adjust their equipment, creating distractions while they work.
The result? Reduced protection and increased risk.
Respirators: A Real-World Example of PPE Compatibility
One of the best examples of compatibility can be found in respiratory protection.
Anyone wearing a tight-fitting respirator must be face fit tested. However, what many people don't realise is that the fit test should be carried out while wearing any additional PPE that will be used alongside the respirator, such as eye protection, hearing protection or head protection.
Why?
Because if another item of PPE affects the respirator seal, the level of protection can be compromised.
Safety Helmets and Ear Defenders
Another common compatibility challenge is helmet-mounted hearing protection.
Helmet-mounted ear defenders are required to be tested and certified in combination with specific helmet models to ensure they continue to provide the expected level of hearing protection.
This is why simply attaching ear defenders from one manufacturer to a helmet from another isn't always the best approach. While they may fit together physically, they may not have been tested together as a complete protection system.
