To be considered competent, a Fit Tester must have both appropriate training and practical experience in the method of fit testing. They must demonstrate the ability to correctly fit and inspect respiratory protective equipment (RPE), as well as identify and resolve any issues that could affect the quality or reliability of the fit.
In addition to practical skills, a competent Fit Tester should have a thorough understanding of relevant legislation, standards, and workplace guidance related to respiratory protection and fit testing. This ensures that the tests are carried out in accordance with legal and best practice requirements, helping to protect workers from respiratory hazards.
Guidance for Fit Testers can be found in the INDG 479. A suite of documents called Fit2Fit Companion(s) raised by BSIF working alongside UK HSE. The documents can be found here: https://www.fit2fit.org/resources/
