Fit testing is a legal requirement for anyone who wears tight-fitting Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE) in the workplace. This ensures the RPE forms an effective seal to the wearer’s face, providing the intended level of protection.
Fit testing must be carried out:
- Before the RPE is used for the first time in the workplace.
- For each specific make, model, type, and size of mask the user will wear.
- When any physical changes occur that could affect the fit, such as significant weight change, dental work, or facial scarring.
This applies to all employees who are required to wear tight-fitting RPE to control exposure to hazardous substances, including dust, fumes, gases, or biological agents. Loose-fitting RPE, such as hoods or helmets with a powered air supply, does not require a fit test but must still be appropriate for the task and the wearer.
Key points:
- Fit testing is legally required for all tight-fitting RPE.
- It ensures the mask provides an effective seal to the wearer’s face.
- Testing must be carried out for each type and model of mask used.
- Changes in facial characteristics may require re-testing.
- Loose-fitting RPE does not require a fit test but must still be suitable.
