RPE does not have a fixed lifespan. Filters must be replaced based on exposure, environment and usage, not just time.
When do I need to exchange or replace a Mask Filter Cartridge / Canister?
With frequent use, filters should not be used for more than 1 week or 5 working days from first use. With infrequent use, a filter should not be used more than 28 days from first use. This is the JSP recommendation, although workplace standing operational procedures would overwrite this.
The biggest detriment to any filter is moisture, humidity, and water / liquid ingress.
- All filters, when exposed to the atmosphere, have a working life expectancy that cannot be truly measured.
- When a filter is opened from its packaging and exposed to the atmosphere, a good rule of thumb is to replace the filter every 28 days. This does NOT mean you have 28 days of use.
- Each challenging environment (hazardous atmospheres) our customers face cannot be measured. These are important factors for the filter, as each scenario is different from customer to customer.
- It is good practice to annotate the filter visibly with the date it was taken out of the packaging and fitted to the mask/respirator.
Are there occasions before the 28-day point when you should exchange your filter?
- When the packaging Shelf Life / Expiry date has concluded.
- If the filter is submerged in water, becomes wet or damp. Ingress of excessive moisture, liquids, cleaning solutions or visibly contaminated
- If the filter becomes damaged in any way or rattles when shaken.
- If breathing becomes difficult, excessive or laboured
- If you can taste/smell the environmental hazard or atmosphere
- You can feel the effects (signs and symptoms) of the potential hazard
What is the lifespan of Disposable face masks?
Disposable face masks are designed for single use and MUST be replaced frequently.
Unlike reusable RPE, disposable masks have a short, task-based lifespan and should never be reused across multiple jobs or shifts.
When should disposable masks be replaced?
Dispose of and replace your mask if:
- It has been used for a single task or job.
- You have worn it for up to 8 hours (one typical work shift).
- You are working in high-dust or high-contaminant environments, where filters clog faster.
- Breathing becomes more difficult, indicating reduced filtration performance.
- The mask becomes dirty, damaged, damp or contaminated.
