When it comes to choosing a respirator, there is no ‘one size fits all’. Did you know masks are available in different sizes?
In the past the only available data for respirator sizing was based on measurements taken in the US military during the 1950s and 1960s. The sample was made up of predominantly male, physically healthy, military-age participants which meant respirators only needed to fit people matching these demographics in order to pass certification testing.
This resulted in respirators being designed and sold for over 50 years without consideration for workers who fall outside these parameters.
New inclusive sizing
In 2007 a new anthropometric survey was conducted to address this. Researchers recognised that the available data was not sufficiently representative of the modern workforce and sought to improve the way respirators are designed and tested.
The new study used a more inclusive sample, including a large number of male and female participants with a wider age range, from a variety of different ethnic groups and backgrounds.
The data collected informed a new standard, ISO 16976-2, which designates headform sizes that are now used by manufacturers and test laboratories to design and assess respirators. ISO 16976-2 also specifies methods for measuring facial dimensions and selecting representative test panels, ensuring that new respirators provide a fit for all wearers.
Expanding the Force®8 range
At JSP, we carry out extensive research and testing to perfect the fit of the Force®8 half mask range. Our technical team conducted quantitative fit testing studies to assess the Force®8 mask on a wide range of wearers.
Facial measurement methods and specifications described ISO 16976-2 helped to capture representative data that could be used to evaluate respirator fit.
The data we collected directed product development, resulting in a range of size options that fit more wearers than ever.
The Force®8 half mask is available in Small (S), Medium (M) and Large (L), plus Short-Wide (S/W) which offers an alternative for those who cannot find a fit with Small or Medium.
The Force® size guide is designed to help you find a fit. Watch how to use the Force® size guide at jspgo.com.
