Which Respiratory products require fit testing?

Understanding when face fit testing is required for respiratory protection

Face fit testing is a legal requirement for all tight-fitting respirators to ensure the wearer is properly protected. A good seal between the facepiece and the wearer’s face is essential to ensure contaminants do not bypass the filter and enter the breathing zone.

The following JSP respiratory products are classed as tight-fitting and therefore require face fit testing:

  • Disposable respirators (FFP1, FFP2, and FFP3 dust masks)
  • Half-face masks
  • Full-face masks

Each individual who uses tight-fitting respiratory protective equipment (RPE) must undergo a face fit test with the specific make and model of the respirator they will be using. If an individual uses more than one type of tight-fitting RPE, each type must be tested separately.

Loose-fitting respirators, such as powered air-purifying respirators with hoods or helmets, do not require face fit testing, as they do not rely on a tight seal to the face.

Key points:

  • Face fit testing is mandatory for all tight-fitting respirators.
  • This includes JSP disposable dust masks, half masks, and full-face masks.
  • Fit testing must be done for each specific mask model used.
  • Loose-fitting respirators do not require fit testing.
  • A good facial seal is critical for the effectiveness of tight-fitting RPE.
