How to maintain a safety helmet

Safety helmets must be well-maintained to provide the highest levels of protection. Inspect the helmet regularly for signs of wear and tear and replace any damaged components to ensure head protection performs when it matters.

Inspection

Helmets should be examined daily for obvious signs of cracking, brittleness or damage to either helmet or harness.

Storage

When not in use or during transportation, store in a suitable container that ensures the helmet:

- is kept out of direct sunlight,
- is stored away from chemicals and abrasive substances,
- cannot be damaged by physical contact with hard surfaces/items.

Storage conditions are an important factor in conserving the electrical and mechanical performance of insulating helmets. Recommended storage conditions are in the range of 20 ± 15°C.

Cleaning

Safety helmets can be cleaned with soap and warm water and dried with a soft cloth. Abrasive substances or solvents should not be used.

Replacement parts

Components can be replaced when required. Replacement sweatbands and harnesses help to increase hygiene and extend helmet life.

Stickers and paints

Stickers, paints or solvent-based markers should not be applied unless approved by the manufacturer. Name badges and emergency details can be stored in compatible ID card holders. New helmets are available with a built-in storage area for I.C.E. information.

End of life helmets

A number of recycling schemes allow safety helmets to be recycled when they reach end of life.
