Regular inspection of height safety equipment is crucial to ensure it remains in good working condition and meets compliance standards. Height safety regulations require periodic inspections and pre-use checks to ensure the equipment is safe for use and free from damage. Here's how you can ensure your height safety equipment is compliant:
Periodic Examination
EN 365 Standard: This standard requires a detailed inspection of fall protection equipment at least once every 12 months by a competent person. However, this period can vary, so it’s important to check local regulations.
Competent Person: A competent person is one with the required training, knowledge of current inspection standards, and familiarity with the manufacturer’s recommendations. JSP offers training on how to perform competent person inspections.
Inspection Focus: Common inspection points include the stitching of webbing, fall indicators, buckles, and connectors. Each product comes with a user manual detailing the specific inspections required.
Pre-Use Checks
Visual Inspection: Before using any fall protection equipment, check for damage or wear to ensure the equipment is safe. This can typically be done by the user. The product instructions provide detailed pre-use check procedures for various equipment types.
Servicing
Mechanical Devices: Equipment such as winches and self-retractable lifelines require servicing, which involves disassembling the device, inspecting components, and replacing any parts that are worn or damaged.
Training and Authorisation: Servicing should only be performed by trained agents authorised by the manufacturer.
Frequency of Servicing: Mechanical devices must be serviced at regular intervals based on usage. For example, JSP self-retractable lifelines need servicing once a year after the first three years of use.
Working Life
Shelf and Working Life: JSP height safety products have a general shelf and working life of 10 years from the date of manufacture. For instance, a product manufactured in 2019 can be used until 2029, provided it passes necessary checks and inspections.
Inspection Before Use: Always inspect equipment for defects before use. If any defects are found, the equipment should not be used.
To maintain compliance and ensure safety, carry out the necessary inspections and servicing as required. Always refer to the product manual for specific instructions.
