Can I write my name on my harness?

Height safety harnesses are made with specialist materials capable of providing the strength required to hold a user securely in the event of a fall.

It might seem natural to write your name on one of the straps to identify equipment, however this can damage the harness and prevent thorough inspection.

The strength and performance of a height safety harness depends on the integrity of the material. Pens, paints and markers often contain solvents that can damage the synthetic webbing many working at height harnesses are made from. If the webbing has been written on, the harness is deemed unsafe and must be disposed of.

An important part of using a harness is carrying out pre-use checks and periodic examinations. This involves inspecting the webbing and stitching. Writing on the harness can prevent full inspection of the webbing and cover the stitch pattern, meaning damage could go unnoticed.

To enable easy identification of equipment, JSP height safety harnesses feature a dedicated space to write the user’s name. The PVC pouch that protects inspection labels has a space for users to write their name that is visible on the front of the harness, making sure height safety equipment is safe and convenient to use.
