How Do I Select Height Safety Equipment for Horizontal Use?

Ensuring fall protection is safe over edges and in horizontal configurations

When selecting height safety equipment for use in horizontal configurations—such as when a worker may fall over an edge—it’s important to ensure the equipment has undergone additional testing beyond standard EN requirements.

Standard EN testing focuses on vertical falls. However, when a fall occurs over a sharp or leading edge in a horizontal setup, there are added risks. For example, the slippage of the device can increase braking forces beyond the 6kN safety limit, and sharp edges can damage the connecting lines. Without proper testing, this could result in injury or equipment failure.

To address this, the European Coordination of Notified Bodies (VG11) have issued Recommendations for Use (RFUs) that outline additional testing methods for edge suitability. These test the performance of self-retractable lifelines, lanyards, and other PFPE when used horizontally.

Testing includes:

Dynamic Performance: Two drop tests from 1.5m—one directly over the edge and one with a 1.5m lateral offset. Braking force must stay below 6kN.

Dynamic Strength: Two further drop tests from 2m height. The equipment must arrest the fall but braking force is not recorded.

Static Strength: Equipment must hold a static force (between 3–4.5kN depending on type) for 3 minutes without failure.

Selecting the correct equipment:
When choosing PFPE for horizontal use, ensure the equipment meets the appropriate EN standard and has passed additional VG11 RFU testing. The relevant CNB reference should appear on the product certificate and user documentation.

Look for the following when selecting JSP products:

Self-retractable lifeline: EN 360 + CNB/P/11.060

Energy absorbing lanyard: EN 354 or EN 355 + CNB/P/11.074

Guided type fall arrester: EN 353-2 + CNB/P/11.075

JSP products suitable for horizontal use are clearly marked with an edge-use icon on the label. Always refer to the product documentation for confirmation of suitability and correct application.

Key points:

Standard EN tests cover vertical use only; horizontal use introduces different risks.

VG11 RFUs ensure equipment is tested for edge durability and braking force limits.

Look for CNB references on certificates to confirm horizontal suitability.

Always match equipment selection to the work scenario and verify product labelling.

JSP products tested for horizontal use will include clear labelling and certification.
