How to fit your JSP Ear Plugs

A step-by-step guide to fitting JSP Soundstoppers™, Soundstoppers™ corded, Soundstoppers™ banded and Maxifit™ Pro ear plugs

Ear plugs are designed to block the ear canal, reducing the level of noise that reaches the inner ear. To ensure they provide the intended level of protection, they must be fitted correctly. Improper use can lead to insufficient protection and potentially irreversible hearing damage, such as tinnitus or noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL).

Each style of ear plug from the JSP range may require a different fitting technique. It's also important to determine whether the ear plugs are reusable or disposable. Disposable plugs should be thrown away after use, while reusable options should be cleaned after each use according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Fitting guide for JSP Ear Plugs

Soundstoppers™ & Soundstoppers™ corded (foam ear plugs):

  1. With clean hands, roll the ear plug between your fingers to compress it.
  2. Gently pull the top of the ear upwards to straighten the ear canal.
  3. Insert the compressed plug into the ear canal.
  4. Hold in place for around 30 seconds while it expands to form a secure fit.
  5. Repeat on the opposite ear. Only a small portion of the plug should be visible once correctly fitted.
  6. To remove, pinch the end of the ear plug and pull it out gently.
  7. Dispose of the ear plugs after use – these are designed for single use only.

Soundstoppers™ banded (pre-moulded plugs on a band):

  1. Hold the band with both hands in front of you.
  2. With one hand, pull the ear lobe back to open up the ear canal.
  3. With the other hand, insert the ear plug into the ear canal.
  4. Repeat for the opposite side, ensuring a snug and secure fit.
  5. To remove, gently pull the band to extract the plugs.
  6. Clean thoroughly after each use – these are reusable.

Maxifit™ Pro (reusable ear plugs):

  1. Gently pull the top of the ear upwards.
  2. Insert the plug into the ear canal using a rotating motion to ensure a secure fit.
  3. Repeat for the other ear. Only the stalk should be visible once fitted correctly.
  4. To remove, gently pinch the stalk and pull out the plug.
  5. Clean after every use – these plugs are reusable.

Key points:

  • Always check whether your ear plugs are disposable or reusable.
  • Proper fit is essential for hearing protection – follow the fitting instructions carefully.
  • Foam ear plugs need time to expand in the ear canal to seal properly.
  • Banded and pre-moulded plugs require secure placement and regular cleaning.
  • Incorrect use can result in permanent hearing damage without noticeable symptoms.
