When should I change my respirator filters?

It is important to look after your respirator. Filters need to be replaced regularly to keep providing protection.

When it comes to maintaining half masks and full face masks, changing the filters is essential. Each filter is printed with an expiry date which must not be exceeded. Once in use, filters should be replaced on a regular basis to ensure the respirator continues to perform correctly.

How long filters last is affected by concentration levels and usage. General guidance applies for filter life, however they may become blocked or exhausted sooner, and it is important to pay attention to the equipment during use.

Particulate (dust) filters become blocked as they reach the end of their usage life, and it takes more effort to draw air through the filters. If you notice an increase in breathing effort increase while wearing the mask, the filters should be changed.

As gas/vapour cartridges are exhausted, the cartridge cannot absorb any more and the wearer is able to smell or taste the contaminant. If gas/vapour can be detected via smell or taste while wearing the mask, this indicates that the cartridges should be replaced.

Implementing a regular schedule for changing filters helps to prevent them becoming exhausted during use. By recording how long filters last in different applications you can establish a schedule to replace filters before they reach end of life.

Powered Air Purifying Respirators (PAPRs) have a built-in warning system that alerts the wearer when the filters are exhausted.

The PowerCap® Infinity® PAPR displays a warning light via the unit’s head-up display and plays an audible notification when the filters need to be changed, maximising their usage life and making sure protection is maintained.

General life guidance applies to different types of filters, but high concentration levels may mean they need to be replaced more frequently. Establishing a regular schedule helps to prevent filters being exhausted while in use. Powered respirators make it simple with a built-in warning system that prompts the wearer to change the filters.
