What do common respiratory protection abbreviations mean?

In discussions about respiratory protection, you might encounter several abbreviations. Here is a simple guide to some of the most common ones and their meanings:

APF – Assigned Protection Factor: Indicates the level of protection provided by respiratory equipment. Higher APF values indicate greater protection levels against harmful airborne substances.

FFP – Filtering Facepieces: Commonly known as disposable dust masks. They filter harmful particulates from the air you breathe.

WEL – Workplace Exposure Limit: A legal maximum concentration of airborne substances allowed in the workplace to protect workers' health.

SCBA – Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus: Equipment supplying breathable air in hazardous environments, independent of external air sources.

COSHH – Control of Substances Hazardous to Health: UK regulations designed to protect employees from hazardous substances in the workplace.

MSDS – Material Safety Data Sheet: Documentation providing detailed information about hazardous substances, including safe handling procedures and emergency responses.

HAZMAT – Hazardous Material: Materials or substances that pose significant risks to health, safety, or the environment.
