What are the different D-rings or loops on a harness used for?

Understanding the function of each attachment point on a height safety harness

Safety harnesses used for working at height come equipped with a variety of attachment points, often referred to as D-rings or loops. Each of these has a specific purpose based on its position and whether it is marked. It is important to use the correct attachment point for the task at hand to ensure compliance and safety.

Here’s a breakdown of what each type of attachment point is used for:

1. Dorsal D-ring marked “A” (on the back)
This is used for fall arrest. It is located on the upper back (dorsal position) and connects to a fall arrest system to safely stop a fall.

2. Sternal D-ring(s) marked “A” or “A/2” (on the chest)
These front-facing attachment points can also be used for fall arrest.

A single point marked “A” can be used on its own.

If there are two points marked “A/2”, both must be used together for the system to be compliant and effective.

3. Side D-rings (unmarked)
These are typically found on the sides of the waist and are used for work positioning or controlled movement along a rope.

They are not designed for fall arrest.

Instead, they help maintain balance and support during tasks at height.

Key points:

Dorsal “A” ring: for fall arrest – back attachment.

Sternal “A” or “A/2” rings: for fall arrest – front chest; use both A/2 together.

Side unmarked rings: for work positioning and rope work – not for fall arrest.

Always check the markings before use and match the attachment point to the task.
