This is a very difficult question to answer. It will depend on the concentration of the hazard and the work rate being applied to the task. Other factors including damage, damp and excessive dirt and contamination to the filter, this will have a detrimental effect upon its functionality. Please remember that once a gas / vapour filter is taken from its packaging it will start to absorb contamination from the environment in which it is used/stored.
When to Exchange and Replace a Filter Cartridge / Canister, the factors involved . . .
The biggest detriment to any filter is moisture, humidity, water / liquid ingress.
- All filters when exposed to the atmosphere have a working life expectancy that cannot be truly measured.
- When a filter is opened from its packaging and exposed to the atmosphere a good rule of thumb is to exchange the filters every 28 days. This does NOT mean you have 28 days of use. Each challenging environment (hazardous atmospheres) our customers face will be different from one day to another. No two tasks will be the same. The work rate for each individual along with time spent in the hazard is another consideration . These are important factors upon the filter as each scenario is different from customer to customer.
- It would be good practice to annotate the filter visibly with the date of issue – an in-house replacement date can also be added to the marking,
- When the packaging Shelf Life / Expiry date has concluded.
- If the filter is submerged in water, becomes wet or damp. Ingress of excessive moisture, liquids, cleaning solutions or visibly contaminated
- If the filter becomes damaged in any way (shape or form) or rattles when shaken.
- If breathing becomes difficult, excessive or laboured.
- If you can taste/smell the environment hazard or atmosphere
- If you can feel the effects (signs and symptoms) of the potential hazard
Key points
- Filter life depends on hazard level, work rate, and environment.
- Filters start working (and absorbing) once unsealed from its packaging.
- Don’t use a filter for more than 28 days after opening.
- If you can smell or taste chemicals, may indicate that the filter is saturated and needs replacement.
- If it becomes harder to breath the filter may be blocked and needs replacement.
- Store filters and masks in a sealed container, away from hazards.
- Always replace filters within 28 days, even if barely used.
